Students that are recognized by teachers and/or parents as academically talented and require a challenge to reach their highest potential should be referred to the Gifted and Talented Coordinator and the middle school counselor. The following testing procedures will then be put in place to determine eligibility.
“Explorer” Class Qualification Process The 6th and 7th grade “Explorer” class is a project based learning course integrated with the technology class. Students will be engaged in solving real-world problems and presenting ideas and solutions to panels of experts. In addition, students will be challenged to explore their passions and will work in teams with other academically talented students.
Students currently in the 5th grade Explorer class may be retested at the end of 5th grade using the Insight Gifted Screener. This test in combination with academic testing and teacher observation will determine eligibility into the middle school program.
Teachers will also recommend students for testing that demonstrate an academic talent that were not previously in the “Explorers” class. Parents will also be given the option to recommend their child for testing.
Parents complete permission form for testing and for the middle school “Explorer” class upon qualification.
Accelerated/Enriched Math (6th-8th grade) Opportunities *Accelerated math will compact the 6th-8th grade math curriculum into 2 years allowing students to complete it at an accelerated pace, but still cover all the curriculum objectives. This will put students on track to open up opportunities for dual enrollment during their high school years.
If you have any questions please contact Rhonda Wilson, Middle School counselor, or Janene Schroeder, Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
